Some knowledge is learned through daily life: caring for cattle, recognising useful plants, preparing agricultural inputs or understanding the changing seasons.
Passed between generations, these skills connect people with their surroundings. Nilam’s ethno-development work in India creates opportunities for this knowledge to remain in practice, reach younger generations and contribute to community livelihoods.
The relationship between cattle and cultivation is an important part of this work. Dung, plant materials and other local resources are used in traditional preparations that connect animal care with farming.
Nilam’s activities include composting, biofertiliser preparation and Panchagavya making. Panchagavya is a traditional agricultural preparation using five cattle-derived ingredients: dung, urine, milk, curd and ghee.
Practical training brings inherited experience together with attention to preparation, quality and appropriate agricultural use.
Nilam Switzerland creates connections through visits, demonstrations, webinars and conversations with community knowledge holders and practitioners.
These exchanges offer a chance to understand how knowledge is used, why it matters to the people who carry it and how it can develop through collaboration. Agnihotra provides another meeting point for exploring the cultural and spiritual relationships between cattle, nature and community life.
