Nilam’s work with the Paliyar communities of the Sirumalai Hills in Tamil Nadu brings together livelihoods, housing, education and the preservation of indigenous knowledge.
The Paliyars carry generations of experience with forests, plants, animals and seasonal resources. Nilam builds on these strengths while supporting families facing uncertain incomes, inadequate housing and limited access to learning opportunities.
Goat rearing, cattle care and work with locally available resources offer pathways for families to strengthen their income within their own communities. Nilam’s programme in India supports participating families through goats and practical animal-care training. Its wider work also explores herbal collection, composting and natural agricultural products as livelihood opportunities rooted in local experience.
Alongside livelihoods, Nilam is working towards improved housing for approximately 70 tribal families. This is a proposed initiative to support safer, more secure living conditions.
Education is another priority: creating opportunities for children to learn and for young people to develop practical skills while staying connected to their community and cultural heritage.
Nilam Switzerland brings supporters, volunteers and collaborators into this work. You can contribute professional skills, support a project or join an exchange visit to meet the people behind the initiatives.
